Look out for the extraterrestrial 'Space Jockey' from Scott's original Alien outing at the 1:00 minute mark...

Aliens to escape from Area 51 in new family movie

Aliens held hostage by the US government at Area 51 are to be freed by their own kind in a daring extraterrestrial prison break next February.

Escape from Planet Earth is a 3D animated family comedy from The Weinstein Company and Rainmaker Entertainment. The movie is voiced by the likes of Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Gandolfini. Its plot is officially described as follows:

“Escape from Planet Earth catapults movie goers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA's no-nonsense chief Lena (Jessica Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary's warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (James Gandolfini), it's up to scrawny, risk-adverse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure hungry son Kip!”

This official blurb makes no mention of Area 51, but an early animation test for Escape to Planet Earth leaves no doubt as to the movie’s setting...

Escape from Planet Earth is due for release February 14, 2013.

Horror Movie Emp...ty Handed? Maybe I can help!

Ok, so by now many of you have heard of the whole HORROR MOVIE EMPIRE debacle. This gent had a crazy Blue Underground Blu-ray sale on his site in late December and now, three months later, a huge number of people have not gotten any product or refunds. It is a total mess and there's a lot of anger and frustration out there on the world wide web. Why did this dude pull this stunt? Will he actually ship product or give refunds like he's promised? Who can we turn to for a resolution to all this bullsh*t?!

I have personally tried to speak with "The Emperor" over at HME and though it seemed like I was making some headway, he vanished as suddenly as he had appeared. Though he has shown some signs of life lately, the majority of customers who shopped at his site are pretty pissed off. He has been slow to answer e-mails and doesn't seem to be in a hurry to help the hundreds (thousands?) of angry folks who are walking away empty-handed.

Don't give up without a fight fellow Cult/Horror/B-Movie fans. E-mail this guy, bug him on Twitter (@horrorempire), and send in your grievances to www.horror-movie-empire.com. (A site set up by the guys from Film Rant in response to this entire fiasco.) If you used a credit card, dispute your purchases ASAP! If you bought stuff from HME via PayPal and it HASN'T been 45 days, dispute it! (After 45 days, PayPal will calmly tell you that you are SOL, and I don't mean "Satellite of Love.") Act quickly or you will find yourself cheated out of money and movies.

For those of you (much like myself) who are totally screwed at this point (unless "The Emperor" actually does follow through and fill orders like he has promised), I am giving you a chance to at least walk away with SOMETHING after suffering through this "nightmare."

Send your UNFULFILLED INVOICES (i.e. receipts for the stuff you never got) to vault_master@bmoviefilmvault.com! And when you send me your invoice(s), make sure that you highlight TWO of the discs that you wanted the most. Then cross your fingers because I will choose one lucky person each month (at random) and mail them a brand new, factory sealed, Blue Underground Blu-ray disc (or two, depending on their price and my available funds). Don't worry about shipping or anything else; I'm footing the bill for this.

Yeah I know this doesn't seem like much, but it is the best I can do. And why am I doing this? Because I'm pissed that someone has once again ripped-off the Horror community and seemingly gotten away with it. (There's some shades of John Gray here...) Even if "The Emperor" intends to fulfill all of the orders, he has tarnished his name permanently because Horror fans have a looooong memory.

In any case, get those invoices/entries in to me ASAP and we'll get this show on the road. If I can pull it off, I'll pick more than one winner a month, but for now let's just keep this small and see how everything pans out.

UPDATE: The trickle of invoices has stopped so I'm setting a cut-off date of April 6th to get your unfulfilled invoices in to me. Also, you can only enter once and can only win once. This way a large number of people will walk away with a Blue Underground Blu-ray that they had originally missed out on during HME's sale. ALSO, Horror Movie Empire will be at the Salt City Horror Fest in Syracuse, NY on April 14th. I will be heading there so I'll be getting some movies or a refund from the proprietor in person. John Carter goes rotten, stink spreads to box-office

Based on a selection of positive critics’ reviews for John Carter earlier this month, I suggested that the Disney movie may do the unthinkable and lift Hollywood’s dreaded Curse of Mars. I cautioned, however, that the critical consensus for John Carter would likely change as more reviews poured in – and change it has, from a “fresh” 77% to a “rotten” 51% on the Rotten Tomatoes 'Tomatometer'.

John Carter’s critical reception is now being reflected at the box-office with the movie pulling in a “disappointing” $30.2 million in its opening weekend according to BoxOfficeMojo.com and having to settle for the number two spot behind The Lorax.

Writing for BoxOfficeMojo.com, Ray Subers notes:

“Disney's marketing department has been beat up on pretty good for the lacklustre John Carter campaign, and to their credit the movie doesn't really lend itself to an easy sell. Still, making the movie is the responsibility of production, and selling the movie is the responsibility of marketing, and in that regard they clearly failed."

It remains to be seen whether the movie will recoup its $250 million (some say 300 million) budget.

Defiance

Deadline.com reports that Julie Benz (Dexter) will star opposite Grant Bowler in the Syfy series Defiance. Tony Curran (Pillars Of The Earth), Jaime Murray and Stephanie Leonidas also have been cast in this live-action drama which Deadline describes as follows:

"Set on a future Earth, Defiance is set in a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Benz, repped by ICM and Vincent Cirrincione, will play Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic newly appointed mayor of the mining boomtown who is determined to maintain peace in the community. Leonidas, repped by UK’s Artists Rights Group and Thruline, will play Irisa, a beautiful warrior who is part of an alien race called the Irathients. After Nolan killed her criminal father, he adopted the girl and raised her as his clever – and lethal – right-hand. Curran, repped by Domain and Sanders/Arstrong/Caserta, will play Datak Tarr, a member of another elite alien race known as the Castithans who schemed his way out of his home planet before it was destroyed. Murray, repped by Sanders/Arstrong/Caserta, will play Datak’s beautiful and proper wife.”

5^th Wave

GK Films and Tobey Maguire's Material Pictures are to produce a movie adaptation of the forthcoming sci-fi novel The 5th Wave, Variety reports, noting that the film will be based on a just-sold proposal by Rick Yancey.

Yancey’s story follows a teenage girl in search of her brother and is against the backdrop of an alien invasion. The girl is aided in her search by a young man who may or may not be an undercover invader himself. No release date as yet.

Electronic Encounters

A fan of Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Stirred by John Williams’ iconic score for said movie? If so, you might be interested in wrapping your ears around Electronic Encounters, a new digital album comprised of tracks directly inspired by Spielberg’s 1977 classic. It makes for intriguing and frequently chilled-out listening.
